Emergency Information Placards
Emergency information placards are located across campus in most corridors, classrooms, labs and other public areas. These placards are mounted in clear acrylic wall frames and contain red and white cards printed on both sides.
The placards include the following information:
- Emergency Evacuation Plan (by building/floor)
- Emergency Evacuation Procedures
- Emergency Evacuation Plan Designated Evacuation Areas
- Emergency Response Checklist
- Emergency Levels
- Emergency Medical Protocols
Students, faculty, staff, and visitors are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the information on these placards and the evacuation routes for the locations on campus they visit.
Emergency Evacuation
Buildings must be evacuated immediately when a fire alarm sounds or when instructed to do so through the public address system.
When evacuating the building:
- walk quickly and calmly to the nearest marked exit
- alert others nearby as you leave
- close office and classroom doors behind you
- proceed to the designated evacuation area for your building
Faculty and staff should direct students and visitors in their areas to evacuate the building. Once outside, individuals should report to the assigned meeting area and make themselves visible to their class instructor and the WCC employee coordinating the evacuation. Make yourself visible or known to the WCC employee in charge of your respective evacuation group.
At the beginning of each semester, instructors should encourage individuals who may need assistance exiting a building during an emergency to self-identify with the instructor and/or WCC Police. This may include:
- individuals using wheelchairs
- individuals with mobility limitations
- visually or hearing-impaired individuals
- anyone who may have difficulty following directions during an emergency
The names and locations of these individuals must be given to the Chief of Campus Police. Evacuation chairs (Evac-Chairs) are available on all upper floors.
Elevators are generally unavailable during emergencies, and individuals with limited mobility may need assistance with stairs. WCC Police and WCC Maintenance will be respond to requests for assistance. If WCC Police are unavailable, individuals who are able should make reasonable to assist those with mobility challenges in safely evacuating the area.
Accident and Medical Emergencies Procedure
In the event of a medical emergency:
- call 911 to request Emergency Medical Services (EMS)
- notify WCC Police at (919) 739-7050 and provide the location and nature of the emergency
Wayne Community College maintains basic first aid kits and Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) in every building. Situations requiring care beyond basic first aid must be handled by an external medical provider.
Under College policy, College staff are not permitted to dispense medications. However, a limited supply of over-the-counter items such as pain relievers and allergy medications may be purchased from the Bookstore during normal operating hours.
Emergency Response Guidelines
If a serious medical emergency occurs:
- Call 911, then contact WCC Police at (919) 739-7050. WCC Police will escort emergency personnel to the scene.
- Do not move injured persons unless:
- you are absolutely certain about their condition, or
- they are in greater danger if they remain where they are.
- During a seizure, do not restrain the individual. Clear the surrounding of hazards and, if possible, gently position the person on their side. Never force the person's mouth open.
Accident Reporting
All accidents must be reported:
- Students - Director of Student Activities or WCC Police after hours
- Employees or Guests - Safety Coordinator
Whenever possible, these notifications should occur before medical transport so that insurance documentation and required notifications can be completed. Failure to follow reporting procedures may result in insurance claims not being covered.
Campus Lockdown
If a dangerous situation poses a serious threat to campus safety, a campus lockdown may be initiated. Lockdown alerts are issued through the WCC Bison Alert system and remain in effect until terminated by law enforcement.
If you are in a classroom
- close and lock the classroom door if possible
- move away from the door and close the window blinds
- silence all electronic devices
- keep low and out of sight
- remain quiet until law enforcement issues further instructions or an “ALL CLEAR” is announced.
If you are in a hallway or outside
- enter the nearest building and secure the room immediately
- If a building or room is not accessible, take cover behind any available object.
- Remain in place until instructed otherwise by law enforcement.
Campus Evacuation
If a campus state of emergency is declared, all nonessential personnel, students, and visitors must begin an orderly evacuation of the campus.
The WCC Police Department will assist with directing traffic and coordinating the safest and most efficient evacuation routes.
Severe Weather Alert
If severe weather threatens campus safety, alerts will be issued through the Bison Alert system. When possible, disconnect electrical and computer equipment and close windows before leaving your area.

If the auditorium is at capacity, move to interior hallways, offices, restrooms, kitchenettes, or other interior spaces away from exterior doors and windows. Avoid the third and fourth floors during severe weather alerts.
Elsewhere on Campus
Individuals in service buildings or outdoor areas should seek shelter in the nearest brick building. If immediate shelter is not available, lie flat in a ditch or other low-lying area.
Whenever possible, avoid hallways that open to the outside. Interior spaces such as restrooms, offices, conference rooms, and closets without exterior windows or doors provide the safest shelter.
All individuals should remain in designated safe areas until Campus Police issues an official "All Clear."
