Emergency Evacuation
Buildings must be evacuated immediately when a fire alarm sounds or when instructed to do so through the public address system.
When evacuating the building:
- walk quickly and calmly to the nearest marked exit
- alert others nearby as you leave
- close office and classroom doors behind you
- proceed to the designated evacuation area for your building
Faculty and staff should direct students and visitors in their areas to evacuate the building. Once outside, individuals should report to the assigned meeting area and make themselves visible to their class instructor and the WCC employee coordinating the evacuation. Make yourself visible or known to the WCC employee in charge of your respective evacuation group.
At the beginning of each semester, instructors should encourage individuals who may need assistance exiting a building during an emergency to self-identify with the instructor and/or WCC Police. This may include:
- individuals using wheelchairs
- individuals with mobility limitations
- visually or hearing-impaired individuals
- anyone who may have difficulty following directions during an emergency
The names and locations of these individuals must be given to the Chief of Campus Police. Evacuation chairs (Evac-Chairs) are available on all upper floors.
Elevators are generally unavailable during emergencies, and individuals with limited mobility may need assistance with stairs. WCC Police and WCC Maintenance will be respond to requests for assistance. If WCC Police are unavailable, individuals who are able should make reasonable to assist those with mobility challenges in safely evacuating the area.
